Proof of work vs proof of stake, the one-line version

Proof of work secures a chain by making block production expensive (computation, hardware, electricity); proof of stake secures it by making dishonest block production expensive (staked capital that gets slashed). Both aim for the same property — costly to attack — through different resources being put at risk.
