What makes a blockchain bridge a favorite exploit target

Bridges have to custody or mint assets based on messages from another chain, which means their security often reduces to a small multisig or a handful of validators — a much smaller attack surface than the base layers they connect. Historically, bridge hacks account for a disproportionate share of total DeFi losses relative to how much value they typically hold.
